Every object has a preferred frequency to vibrate at, called the natural frequency. When you pluck a guitar string, you only provide a random jittery movement, not the intended note (your finger does not sing, for example, an E note); yet, the string converts it into an orderly vibration with a specifically tuned frequency. Sometimes vibration appears to be contagious. Bring two objects with the same natural frequency and put them nearby. Hit one object. Voila! The other will vibrate, too. This phenomenon, an invisible induction of energy of a wave, is called resonance, and is the foundation of all sounds.
