Sometimes we don't want to react to sound, but we can't help it. The sound from upstairs you hear every so often drives you crazy. Every time a cubicle neighbor munching his snack, you wish your hearing was not this good. The problem is, whenever we hear a sound, we are programmed to process it out of reflex. Here comes noise, which is by definition random and carries no information. Thus, the brain is obliged to show an "empty" response, not a no response. You appreciate your brain emptying itself; except you have to fight the other side of you feeling bored.
