36. Following an object moving up/down

Post by bjkwon » June 14th, 2020, 6:17 pm

Following the location of sound moving up/down at the center line is not as straightforward as something moving left/right. There are no differences between ears in the intensity and the arrival time. How do we then locate the sound moving up/down? It takes an acquired, rather than innate, skill. The key is the peculiar shape of your own pinna, which changes the spectrum of sound through complex reflections according to the elevation angle of the incoming sound. Throughout the childhood, we learn to interpret these minute changes as the direction. If you wonder about hearing without this cue, try active noise cancelling headphones.
