Well, that's only the beginning. Their task actually centers around hearing for beats--that warbling or wowow-yoyoe-ing interactions of two waveforms with slightly different frequencies {episode 30}--and counting them. This is because the equal temperament scale produces slightly off-integer ratios for musical intervals. The number of beats per second reveals the precise frequencies of the pressed piano keys. The tuner adjusts the strings to make the right beat counts. They are far from searching for the most beautiful harmony. Most music lovers wouldn't enjoy doing it. Next time you enjoy piano sounds, think about the piano tuners' painstaking efforts.
